Huntingdon softball closes out conference play unbeaten

The Huntingdon softball team closed out the regular season with a pair of 11-4 wins over Salem College on Saturday.
 
Huntingdon (23-9, 16-0 Great South Athletic Conference) has won 23 of its last 26 games this season and 20 straight GSAC games dating to last season. Entering the conference tournament next week, Huntingdon has won 34 of its last 35 conference games.
 
In Saturday’s sweep, the Lady Hawks finished with 21 hits and three home runs. Brittany Richardson was 5-for-7 on the day with four runs and a RBI and Lauren Welch was 3-for-7 with a two-run homer, four RBIs and three runs.
 
Holly Ostrander hit a solo home run, drove in two runs and scored three runs and Halleigh DiNicholas hit a two-run home run and finished with two RBIs and three runs.

PCA students raking in big awards!

Prattville Christian Academy 7th grader, Chris Lough, has won the Geography Bee for the state of Alabama. He will be competing in the National Geographic Geography Bee in Washington D.C. This bee will be hosted by Alex Trebeck and will air on National Geographic some time after May 22nd. Congratulations, Chris!

PCA seventh grader Kara Green was recently selected as a winner in the Alabama State Bar’s Law Day 2013 contest. Kara placed first in the contest for seventh to ninth graders, and will receive $200.00 as a prize. A ceremony to recognize all winners will be held on Wednesday, May 1, at the Supreme Court courtroom in the Heflin-Torbert  Judicial Building in Montgomery.  Congratulations, Kara!

Franks earns ninth Army ROTC Athletic Achievement Award

Auburn Montgomery senior Eran Franks was selected the ninth recipient of the Army ROTC Athletic Achievement Award for the 2012-13 school year on Wednesday, for his efforts both on and off the baseball field.

Criteria for the Army ROTC Athletic Achievement Award includes being certified for eligibility and involved in participation of a varsity sport; performance on the field or court during the previous two weeks; contributions to the team's success through their individual leadership skills, their commitment to teamwork, their extra effort during practice and their demonstration of sportsmanship; and performance off the field of play, including academic success, character and exemplary community outreach.

During the two weeks of his nomination, Franks helped the Warhawks to a 5-1 mark, with all six games counting toward the Southern States Athletic Conference standings.

Huntingdon softball claims regular-season GSAC title

Lauren Welch hit a grand slam in Game 1 and Brittany Richardson ended Huntingdon’s 7-3 and 11-3 sweep of Agnes Scott with a solo home run in Game 2.
 
The Lady Hawks (21-9, 14-0 Great South Athletic Conference) locked up the regular-season conference title with the wins. Huntingdon, which has won 18 straight conference games and 32 of its last 33 conference games, will close out the regular season on Saturday with a conference doubleheader at Salem.
 
Huntingdon totaled 23 hits in Wednesday’s doubleheader. The Lady Hawks used a six-run fifth inning to take control of Game 1 and scored in every inning in Game 2.
 
Welch finished with five RBIs and two runs in the doubleheader. Her grand slam in the bottom of the fifth inning gave Huntingdon a 6-0 lead in the first game. Richardson was 5-for-7 on the day with three RBIs and two runs.

Huntingdon softball sweeps Covenant on Senior Day

The Huntingdon softball team remained unbeaten in conference play with a sweep of Covenant College on Tuesday. The Lady Hawks celebrated Senior Day with a pair of five-inning, 10-2 victories.
 
After a 0-6 start this season, Huntingdon (19-9, 12-0 Great South Athletic Conference) has won 19 of its last 22 games. Going back to last season, Huntingdon has won 16 straight conference games and 30 of its last 31 conference games.
 
On Tuesday, freshman Halleigh DiNicholas hit her third and fourth home runs of the season in the second game. DiNicholas hit a two-run homer in the first inning and another two-run homer in the fifth inning.

Huntingdon baseball completes season sweep of Birmingham-Southern

Keegan Lambeth and Seth Currie drove in five runs and Huntingdon’s pitching and defense took care of the rest as the Hawks beat Birmingham-Southern 5-4 on Tuesday.
 
The win capped a season-sweep of the Panthers. The Hawks (24-9) beat Birmingham-Southern (25-12) 4-3 and 4-1 earlier this season.
 
Lambeth smashed a three-run home run in the first inning for a 3-1 lead and Currie hit a two-run single in the sixth for a 5-2 lead. The Panthers rallied with two runs in the seventh inning before closer Neil Lawler took the mound for the final three innings.
 
Lawler entered the game in the seventh inning with a 5-4 lead, runners on first and second and no outs. The junior worked his way out of the seventh without giving up a run and only allowed one batter to reach base in the eighth.
 
In the ninth, the Panthers managed a triple with one out.

Warhawks mens baseball split twin bill against Talladega College

The Auburn Montgomery baseball team split its non-conference doubleheader against Talladega College on Monday, falling in eight innings in the opener, 6-5, and outlasting the Tornadoes 18-14 in the nightcap.

With the split, the Warhawks now stand at 28-17-1 on the season, while Talladega is 25-20.

Chad Mansmann led AUM with four hits in the twin bill, while Blake Bearden and Eran Franks each added three. Brett Wellman paced the Warhawks with four runs batted in, including three on a home run during the marathon second game. Bearden and Hayden Hillyer finished with three RBIs each. Mansmann also swiped three bases in the two games.

Britt Wilson (2-1) picked up the victory for AUM in game two, tossing 1 1/3 innings of perfect relief, striking out two of the four batters he faced. Patrick Devault (3-3) was the tough-luck loser in game one, allowing one run and one hit in 2 2/3 innings of relief.
