Autauga County native joins Alabama Farmer's Federation summer staff

 

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — The Alabama Farmers Federation has hired Katie Wendland of Autaugaville as a summer intern in the organization’s Communications Department. This is the second consecutive internship for Wendland, an Auburn University junior.

“I am so excited to have the opportunity to work here at the Federation again,” said Wendland, whose father, Andy Wendland, operates Autauga Farming Co. “I am fortunate to be surrounded by so many talented individuals who are willing to give their time and efforts to help make me a better advocate for the agricultural community. Federation members are excellent examples of agricultural advocates, and I look forward to helping promote the transparency displayed in farming and producing practices to better educate the public.”

Tenth annual Marbury Technology Innovation Award finalists announced

 

Montgomery, Ala. — A group of K-12 educators, administrators and support personnel are among the finalists for the 2013 Marbury Technology Innovation Award.

 

The award, sponsored by the Alabama State Department of Education, honors Chiquita Marbury's invaluable years of service as a technology innovator in Alabama by recognizing educators who are exemplary models of technology teachers and leaders.

 

Transforming learning one child at a time was Marbury’s daily pursuit. After 10 years, this passion is continued through the Marbury Technology Award program. Finalists who reflect the Marbury standard of excellence in six award categories are:

PCA Third Grader Collin Hancock wins Kid's Sports Illustrated Contest

 

PCA third grader Collin Hancock was determined to win a contest sponsored by Kid's Sports Illustrated, and that is exactly what he did according to his mother, Shannon Hancock. One Saturday after she had returned home from a long trip to Romania with the National Guard, he wouldn't stop talking about it to her, so she finally stopped unpacking to help him log on to the  Kid's Sports Illustrated Magazine website to understand what this contest was all about. The contest, called "Team Up to Fight Hunger" required contestants to explain how  he or she  would let the world know about starving kids in the Horn of Africa. The contest stated there would be 7 winners and they would each receive a $100 gift card and be featured in a future issue of Kid's Sports Illustrated.

PCA's Chris Searcy named Alabama Speech and Debate Student of the Year at State Tournament

 

After a very successful first year with the PCA Speech and Debate team, Chris Searcy, a  Prattville Academy senior, was awarded Student of the Year at the Alabama Speech and Debate state tournament held April 18-20 at LAMP.  Chris also won 1st place in poetry, 5th place in Original Oratory, and was student runner-up in novice congress.  Luke DeMarco, a PCA junior,  won 1st place in Humorous Interpretation and 2nd place in Prose.  Sophomore Hannah Cherry  and Jordan Graham, a junior,  won 1st place in Duo and Hannah won 4th place in Dramatic Interpretation.

PCA's Adam Roberson accepts Cross and Flame Scholarship from Huntingdon College

Adam Roberson, a senior at Prattville Christian Academy, has accepted the Cross and Flame Scholarship to Huntingdon College, and has committed to play basketball for the Hawks beginning this fall.  The Cross and Flame Grant/Scholarship is awarded to Methodist students based on their grades and leadership accomplishments. The amount is for $10,500 a year and is renewable all 4 years he will be at Huntingdon College.

B.A.S.S. to Host Bassmaster Elite Series Alabama River Charge Presented by Star brite

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – April 30, 2013— B.A.S.S. will host the Alabama River Charge presented by Star brite, May 9 – 12, on the Alabama River in Montgomery, Ala., the fifth of eight Bassmaster Elite Series professional bass fishing tournaments scheduled in 2013.

 

One hundred of the top bass anglers in the world will compete for a $100,000 prize and coveted entry into the 2014 Bassmaster Classic to be held in Birmingham, Ala., with fishing on Lake Guntersville. Among the field of competitors will be fishing legend Kevin VanDam, 2013 Bassmaster Classic Champion Cliff Pace and 16 Alabama anglers.

 

From watching the first boats launch at 6:30 a.m. on Thurs., May 9, and the final weigh-in at the Montgomery Riverfront on Sunday at 3:15 p.m., to participating in the family-friendly Elite Series Expo, the activities planned throughout the weekend are free and open to the public, including:
