Gov. declares proration on Ala. education budget

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - Alabama Governor Robert Bentley declared proration on the state's education budget Monday because of revenue shortfalls. The governor declared 3% proration in the FY 2011 Education Trust Fund.

Bentley said he also plans to declare 15% proration in the state's General Fund, after first working with the Legislature for supplemental appropriations to protect priority agencies that provide necessary and critical services.

Deatsville man arrested for string of armed robberies

MILLBROOK, AL (WSFA) - A man suspected of carrying out four armed robberies in Millbrook has been arrested by Police.

The string of robberies stretches back to December 22, 2010 and started at the China King Restaurant on Highway 14. The next business to be hit was the Metro Petro on Deatsville Highway on January 14 followed by The Pit Stop on Main Street on January 22. The suspect then robbed the same China King again on January 24.

Each time it was reported a lone black man entered the business brandishing a handgun. The suspect would demand money and assault the clerks by striking them in the head with the handgun.

On February 27 at approximately 10:30 p.m. the Millbrook Police, with assistance from the Elmore County Sheriff's Office arrested 24-year-old Johnnie L. Davis of Deatsville.

Davis has been formally charged with four counts of Robbery in the First Degree, the total bond for these cases has been set at $360,000.

Prattville city council names interim fire chief

PRATTVILLE, AL (WSFA) - Prattville's city council named an interim fire chief in a special called meeting last night despite the fact that the current chief, Stanley Gann, has not offered his resignation. The council voted 4-2 in favor of naming Deputy Chief Terry Brown the interim chief effective March 2.

Gann will have until then to step down.

Councilman Ray Boles said department heads in the city need to get on board with new mayor Bill Gillespie's plan to move the city forward -- or get out.

More changes to Prattville City staff

PRATTVILLE, AL (WSFA) - The city staff in Prattville is changing again. City Clerk Gina Smith is the latest city employee to leave her position after tendering her resignation. Smith's last day is February 25.

Mayor Bill Gillespie would not comment on Smith's decision to step down from her position citing policy not to comment on personnel matters.

Other Prattville offices recently vacated include that of the mayor and the city finance director. The city council also voted Monday to replace longtime Fire Chief Stanley Gann.
