Take steps to be weather ready during National Severe Weather Preparedness Week

Take steps to be weather ready during National Severe Weather Preparedness Week

The Alabama Emergency Management Agency (AEMA) and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) are teaming up to promote National Severe Weather Preparedness Week March 3-9. Sponsored by FEMA and the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Severe Weather Preparedness Week encourages individuals, families, businesses and communities to know about severe weather risks, take action to prepare for them, and Be a Force of Nature by encouraging others to get prepared.

Each year, many people are killed or seriously injured by tornadoes and other types of severe weather, despite advance warning. In 2012, there were more than 450 weather-related fatalities and nearly 2,600 injuries nationwide. Severe weather knows no boundaries and affects every individual in every region.

Calling All Soup Chefs and Soup Lovers!

Calling All Soup Chefs and Soup Lovers!

On Saturday, March 9, plan to tantalize your taste buds while benefiting not only your stomach but the needs of our community at the Tasty Creations Soup Cook Off.  The Prattauga Art Guild is partnering with the Autauga Interfaith Care Center for a fundraising event to help replenish the food bank after the holiday needs were met.

A small monetary donation or a donation of non-perishable food items for the food bank gains you admission to this soup soiree and the chance to taste the temptations of the best cooks in the area with their favorite soups.

Enjoy soup in a handmade bowl created especially for this event by a local artist.  For a donation of $10, $12, or $15 to the event, you will not only enjoy hot soup on a cool March afternoon, but will be able to take home an original work of art by one of our featured artists or by one of our many participating members of the Prattauga Art Guild.

Prattville PD kicks off new season of civilian firearms training

Prattville PD kicks off new season of civilian firearms training

Over the past three years, the Prattville Police Department has provided the Civilian Firearms Safety and Familiarization Course to the general public. This course takes an attendee through basic safety, care, and proper use of a firearm.

“If you are going to own a firearm, it is imperative that you learn how to use it safely, as well as how to take care of it so that it functions properly,” stated PPD Firearms Instructor Lt. Wayne Barlow. “This class will provide a good foundation for those who own a weapon and those who are contemplating purchasing one.”

The two classes in March are already full. The next class date is scheduled for April 27, 2013. Attendees are required to pay a $10 fee that will be used to cover the cost of the targets. Those interested in attending need to complete the registration form on the City of Prattville website.
