Two Montgomery men charged in Billingsley manhunt

BILLINGSLEY, AL (WSFA) - The Autauga County Sheriff's Office says they have arrested one Montgomery man and charged a second man in connection with a burglary spree in Chilton, Bullock and Autauga counties that led to a large scale manhunt in Billingsley.

On Wednesday, October 3, an off-duty Autauga County Sheriff's Deputy noticed a suspicious vehicle, a white Chevrolet 3500 pick-up truck at the U.S. Hwy. 82 Country Mart in Billingsley. The vehicle was possibly connected to several residences in Billingsley that had recently been burglarized - three men were inside the truck at the time.

The deputy approached the vehicle and noticed a large number of firearms and personal property in the truck and identified himself as a law enforcement official. A short struggle ensued and the three suspects fled the area on foot.

Montgomery, AL--On October 16, 2012, James Whitaker, 59, of Prattville, Alabama, pled guilty to one count of participating in an act which affected a personal financial interest, announced United States Attorney, George L. Beck, Jr.

            Whitaker was an employee of the Air Force Legal Operating Agency.  As an employee, Whitaker directed those attending courses held on Maxwell Air Force Base to stay at the Renaissance Hotel, in Montgomery, Alabama, instead of staying on Base or at other approved housing.  Whitaker arranged for the attendees to stay at the Renaissance, a Marriott Hotel, in order for Whitaker to personally receive Marriott Rewards Points.  From January 27, 2011, until June 23, 2011, Whitaker personally received 100,000 Marriott Rewards Points, which according to Marriott International has a value of $1,250.00.

AUTAUGA CO., AL (WSFA) - The Autauga County Sheriff’s Office along with city, state and federal law enforcement started before daybreak, looking to serve around 50 warrants. 

Autauga County Chief Deputy Joe Sedinger says this round up has been one year in the making, targeting offenders involved in drugs, specifically crack, and illegal firearms. 

The crackdown spanned the entire county, even spilling over into Chilton County.  For hours, Air One, the State Trooper helicopter, hovered over Autaugaville near a command post. 

As Marshals, deputies or local police officers served the warrants, they would bring the offenders to the command post, to later be processed at the Autauga County Jail.

Authorities searching for two escaped inmates from the Elmore County Jail

ELMORE CO., AL (WSFA) - Elmore County Sheriff Bill Franklin says authorities are searching for two men who escaped from the Elmore County Jail Monday night.

Authorities say the two inmates, 40-year-old Jamie Morgan and 33-year-old Jeremy Hadden, were in their cell at a check at 9:03 p.m. The two managed to escape some time before the next check at 10 p.m. Sheriff Franklin said the building was compromised at that time but could provide no additional details regarding the escape.

Morgan, from Montgomery, had been in the Elmore County Jail for 51 days charged with six counts of second-degree theft of property. Hadden, from Mobile, had been serving in the Elmore County Jail for 224 days for prior escape charges as well as two counts of theft of property first-degree.

Alabama Department of Corrections tracking dogs have been called in to assist in the search. It is believed the escapees traveled by foot approximately one mile north on 231 at the wood line.

Autauga County man convicted in child abuse case

AUTAUGA CO., AL (WSFA) - An Autauga County man is awaiting his sentencing after a jury convicted him of child abuse.

According to authorities, 21-year-old Mohamad Osman was convicted of aggravated child abuse by an Autauga County Jury on Thursday. Osman was charged in the case following an incident involving his two twin boys.

Judge Sibley Reynolds is expected to sentence Osman on November 8. Osman is facing up to 30 years in prison.

ELMORE CO., AL (WSFA) - Central Alabama CrimeStoppers is asking for help in locating 54-year-old Winston Lucas.

Lucas is wanted out of Elmore County on charges of sexual abuse of a child less than 12, violation of the community notification act and failure to register as a sex offender.

Lucas is a black male, approximately 5'8", 160 lbs.

Prattville man sentenced for improperly storing and disposing of hazardous waste

Montgomery, Alabama – Arville “Buddy” Thomas, 71, formally of Prattville, Alabama was sentenced to three years’ probation for storing and disposing of hazardous waste at his former company in Prattville, Alabama, without a permit, announced U.S. Attorney George L. Beck, Jr.  Thomas previously owned Deep South Plating, Inc. in Prattville.  Deep South Plating was a metal plating company that used heavy metals in liquid form.  These liquid metals created hazardous byproducts, including copper cyanide, nickel cyanide and sulfuric acid.  These and other hazardous byproducts were improperly stored in open vats and unsecured metal drums on the property.  Thomas abandoned the company in 2008 and moved to Tennessee.  When federal agents located Thomas in Tennessee, he admitted that the hazardous materials at Deep South Plating were improperly handled and stored before he abandoned his company.
